MtekVision, the largest domestic multimedia/imaging fabless company, announced on Sept. 6 that it is going to release the chipset “AMEE” which supports the 13.56 Hz band’s NFC method, one of the mobile RFID technologies.
Up until now, domestic companies have relied on foreign technology in Near Field Communication (NFC) for settlement and others. “AMEE” which is developed by MtekVision is the result of the IT industrial technology support program started in Dec. 2008 by the Ministry of Information and Communication to support the growth and development of the domestic IT industry by helping the development of core technology.
NFC is an active communication technology that helps people to read and write data from a short distance such as within 10 meters from the object. It is also widely used in the fields of access control and electronic settlement. If the device installed with NFC technology is accessed to the settlement device, the certification and settlement along with a small amount settlement, internet banking, and settlement in Internet shopping malls are easily performed. In addition, pictures or movies saved in cell phones can be shared with others by just touching the device. The potential of NFC is immense and its scope of application is wide. Therefore, many terminal manufacturers, mobile carriers, and credit card companies are interested in NFC technologies.
MtekVision’s AMEE supports not only ISO/IEC 14443A/B which is the settlement standard at 13.56MHz RFID standard but also AFE (Analog Front End) and protocol which support the logistic and ID standard of ISO/IEC15693. It also completely supports the NFC (ISO/IEC 18092) which will be the global standard in 2012. In addition, having an independent security engine of its own development, it is forecasted to support all real-time codified security specifications such as MiFare and Felica. It also has security solutions based on 3-DES (Data Encryption Standard) and AES (Advanced Encryption Standard), which are expected to have a firm position as the non-contact communication security solution in the future settlement system.
AMEE is developed in a way that the chip can optimize RF sensibility and power control on its own and thus get a stable production rate. In the field of NFC’s P2P communication field, it has its own technology installed, which can transmit data at speeds up to 1.69Mbps. It also has a stable chipset against noise and interference.
Up to now the parts market of 13.56 MHz RFID and NFC have been led by NXP of the Netherlands and Sony of Japan. Therefore, all of the parts were supplied to the Korean market by overseas manufacturers. That is because MiFare of NXP and Felica Sony take up almost all of the market. (MiFare takes up 80% of the world market.) Almost all of the domestic non-contact small amount settlement systems have adopted the MiFare-based solutions.However, MiFare Classi has some problems in hacking and security. The problems have been shown in television programs and the solutions have not been found yet. To act against those problems, it is urgent that the domestic industries should have an independent security standard.
Mr. Seo Beom-Su, senior researcher of MtekVision said, “No domestic companies have the tag and reader chip technology. In order to lead the security standard in the future, it is important for domestic companies to obtain the technologies of both tag and reader. In addition, to get the license for the existing security standard, the Government should give its support, and the establishment of domestic security standard is critical.” He continues to say, “It is not a good way to solely rely on overseas technology which is in charge of most of the domestic settlement procedure. As domestic companies have acquired a sufficient level of technology, it is now time to independently develop this technology.”
RFID market volume has reached 6 billion US dollars in 2010. As the total industry which grows by 35% every year is related to not only the IT field but also to related services, settlement type contents, and financing and logistics, it has a great potential in industrial synergistic effect, thus being the most effective industry in starting new business developments and job creation. In China, the Chinese government has supported the related industries on a continual basis, resulting in Chinas ability to record a brilliant growth rate of 39.3% over the previous year, making the China market one of the top 3 markets in RFID.
Mr. Kim Do-Hyung, marketing manager of MtekVision says, “MtekVision will acquire all RFID chipset product lines by the second quarter of next year for the applied fields. We will prepare various package types of solutions for every field.” In addition, he said, “RFID products are mostly provided to SME except cell phone fields. Therefore, it is better to provide the module based solution for faster dissemination to businesses. We will expand the business opportunities for RFID, such as readers, door locks, vehicle smart keys as well as cell phones. We will be one of top 3 RFID vendors by 2013.”
